These verses come right after King Darius signed a law declaring anyone who prayed to any god or human other than himself would be thrown in the lions den. Daniel’s death sentence was just signed by the government that he served and worked for – yet this changed nothing for him. Because he still knew who God was and he still knew who he was. His eyes were focused on the bigger picture and he had faith in God. So he prayed as he always did and gave thanks. Thanks because the culture may change, the circumstances may change, the government may change, but our God does not. And who we are in Him does not. Our God is the same yesterday, today and forever. Our calling is still the same, our hope is still the same, our eternity is still the same. So today we can give thanks with our whole heart because our God still reigns and Jesus is still King.
